Unite for Peace

Unite for PeaceSAVE THE DATE!

Saturday May 2, 2009
8:30a.m.-4:00p.m.

Out of the Office of City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence Jones, the 1st Annual Unite for Peace Festival will provide a wonderful opportunity for young people to be creative, perform and contribute to their community. Moreover, this event will provide an outlet for young people to engage as active members of their community. They will become empowered as both performers and as agents of change. Through active participation in the creation of the Festival and the creation of Youth Unite for Peace Clubs in their schools, youth will gain an experiential understanding of what it takes to create community. Not only are they involved behind the scenes for months in advance, they take on visible leadership roles during the Festival. The Festival’s events will include:

Youth Unite for Peace Parade- Youth from around the nation will come together and demonstrate the power of one united call for peace and unity in their communities as they parade to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the family festival. The parade will consist of organized youth groups, after school programs, bands and youth performers.

Family Fest- After the parade, youth and families will enjoy hands-on, free, fun learning activities that promote teamwork, peace and unity. The Festival will also include access to community services utilizing educational mobile vans. Event highlight: We want to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest drum circle (3140).

Youth Performance Theatre- The power of youth creativity as a meaningful and powerful voice for change will be showcased through the production, “Universal Beat,” and include an international display of drama, dance, poetry, music and song.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Shedia Nelson, Performance Director at shedia@urgentinc.org or call 305-576-3084x26.
