OUR VOICE MATTERS

our Voice Matters

Join us for this year's Our Voice Matters Exhibit, "From Canvas to Camera-Overtown in Focus" during Overtown's Soul Basel in Miami, December 4-6, 2025. This dynamic, three-day event celebrates youth creativity, storytelling, and community through the powerful medium of Photovoice. Experience the world through the eyes of young people as they express their unique perspectives, stories, and dreams using photography and creative narrative.

This year's exhibit bridges generations of artistry and advocacy, pairing the powerful visual narratives of legendary artist Purvis Young with the contemporary perspectives of URGENT, Inc.’s Our Voice Matters youth photographers. Together, their work captures Overtown’s enduring spirit — its struggles, triumphs, and transformation.

The gallery exhibit kicks off on Thursday, December 4th at 4 PM with an opening reception, featuring the unveiling of the Photovoice exhibition. Friday, December 5th, will feature a panel discussion.

On Saturday, December 6th, join us for Paint and Pizza Family Day, where families can come together to engage in hands-on workshops exploring photography, comic drawing, painting, and spoken word.

About Photovoice: Youth Photovoice is an empowering journey of self-expression through photography. This project employs a participatory research method that merges the art of photography with storytelling, giving young individuals the platform to convey their unique experiences, viewpoints, and aspirations. Beyond capturing images, it serves as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue, community engagement, and positive change.

About the Process: Over 9 weeks, youth jumped into the Photovoice process. Equipped with disposable and digital cameras, young minds documented their daily lives, challenges, strengths, and concerns. Guided by questions such as "What does community mean to you?" and "What brings you joy?" they carefully selected their most impactful photos, each accompanied by a title and narrative conveying a message they wish to share.
